Summer Senior Employment Program (SSEP)

After a very productive five-year collaboration with ReServe – Fedcap, WHDC is happy to announce that our West Harlem Skills Training Center will solely manage our Summer Senior Employment Program (SSEP). Since 2013, our summer program has placed older residents of West Harlem in part-time, stipend-paid positions contributing a meaningful service to their communities and helping under resourced nonprofits and public agencies to meet staffing gaps.

COVID-19 UPDATE:  For seven years, WHDC’s Summer Senior Employment Program (SSEP) has offered living-wage paid summer employment to 100-125 seniors in the West Harlem community aged 55+ years. WHDC shifted its 2020 summer program to start in September due to the pandemic and has enrolled 120 participants to work with more than 30 worksites, many virtually. It is WHDC’s priority to ensure the health and safety of our seniors. All safety protocols are incorporated into SSEP activities including social distancing, regular cleaning/sanitizing, and masks are required.

WHDC’s West Harlem Skills Training Center (WHSTC) has concluded the application process for 2020. Accepted applicants will provide payroll information and attend an orientation on the employment opportunities available for our senior residents.

For each of the past three summers, WHSTC has proudly afforded positions to hundreds of West Harlem Seniors. WHDC will pay each participant $15 an hour for up to 120 hours within the program period.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Be 55+ years old
  • Live in West Harlem (MCD9)
  • NY State ID
  • Social Security Card
  • Available to work for up to 120 hours from September 1st through October 30th 2020
