ARISE! Youth Development Program

WHDC launched the ARISE! (All Rising In Strengthening Excellence) youth development program in July 2017, providing West Harlem youth between the ages of 14-18 years old with paid summer employment and academic enrichment for six weeks in July and August. The program included job readiness, career exploration, mentorship, and participation in community service activities. MCD9 youth participants are eligible for a $1500 stipend based on attendance, participation, and progress.

COVID-19 UPDATE:  From 2011- 2016, WHDC invested $2.1M to ensure that at least 250 youth in CD9 were guaranteed slots in New York City’s Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP). In 2017, WHDC initiated its own ARISE! Summer Youth Employment and Education Program that serves 100 CD9 high school students each summer paying them for participation in both employment and academic enrichment components. The latter aims to address the “summer slide” that affects some students after the school year. Through 2019, WHDC has expended $3.1M on both ARISE! and our investment in SYEP.

WHDC is closely monitoring official recommendations for combating the COVID-19 pandemic. Please note that in our hopes to offer the 2020 program to West Harlem’s youth, it is necessary to make changes to education and employment activities. We are excited to offer the educational component virtually for this summer’s ARISE! program. All precautions will be taken when the program begins. Thank you to all who have applied. We will keep all youth applicants informed around each phase of the application and enrollment process.

2020 ARISE! Program Dates:  July 6th – August 14th

West Harlem Development Corporation (WHDC) is pleased to announce that amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, it will run a modified ARISE! for the summer of 2020 from July 6, 2020 through August 14, 2020. WHDC will offer the academic enrichment component of ARISE! for six weeks on a virtual platform. There will be no worksite employment component for 2020.
WHDC’s goal is to help students learn, review, and possibly be ahead of material that may have been affected by the disruptions in the 2020 school calendar caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Student participants should be prepared for the 2020/2021 academic year. Participants will receive incentives to realize the most benefit from ARISE!. For the six weeks, they will receive a maximum stipend of $1,500 upon successful completion of all expectations.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Minimum of 14 years of age (by the start of the program)
  • Must be an 8th grader going to High School or a Freshman, Sophomore or Junior in high school during academic year 2019/2020
  • Proof of West Harlem – Manhattan Community District 9 (MCD9) residency
  • A commitment to completing the entire six (6) weeks of program without interruption
