Summer Senior Employment Program (SSEP)

WHDC’s West Harlem Skills Training Center manages the Summer Senior Employment Program (SSEP). Since 2013, our summer program has placed hundreds of older West Harlem residents (55+ years) in part-time, stipend-paid positions at local nonprofits and public agencies. SSEP gives participants the opportunity to contribute meaningful service to their communities and help under-resourced organizations meet staffing gaps.

SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS:  The COVID-19 pandemic necessitated that WHDC shift its 2020 summer program to start in September. WHDC is committed to support West Harlem’s most vulnerable residents and insisted the program remain a viable option. Despite the challenges of gathering safely, more than 120 seniors successfully completed SSEP 2020. For Summer 2021, it is WHDC’s continued priority to ensure the health and safety of our seniors. All safety protocols are incorporated into SSEP activities including: social distancing, regular cleaning/sanitizing, and masks are required.

The SSEP application process for Summer 2021 is now closed. Accepted applicants will provide payroll information and be matched to employment opportunities available for our senior residents.

Each eligible participant will earn $15 an hour for up to 120 hours within the program period.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Be 55+ years of age
  • Live in West Harlem (MCD9*)
  • NY State ID
  • Social Security Card
  • Available to work for up to 120 hours from June 1st through July 30th 2021

*MCD9 Boundary – 110th to 155th Streets from the Hudson River to an eastern boundary along Manhattan, Morningside, St. Nicholas, Bradhurst, and Edgecombe Avenues.
