Grant Houses Rolls Out Smart Community Initiative
September 27, 2019
The Smart Community Initiative provides community wireless Emergency and Information Broadcast Services, Residential Community Watch, and Universal Broadband, as well as other resident community collaborative services and programs.
The president of Grant Houses Residents Association, Mr. Carlton Burroughs collaborated with Digital Divide Partners to offer Grant Houses technology services including security cameras in common areas, a broadcast radio station on site for community announcements and streaming, and a pilot to offer wireless internet access to one of its nine buildings on the property.
Grant Houses used a portion of their allocation of funds from the Community Benefits Agreement with Columbia University to finance the technology and research initiative.
Residents have seen an immediate return on the wise investment. Safety and security has improved. The on-site streaming studio has welcomed famous guests to broadcast to tenants, and the positive feedback has fueled talks of expanding Wi-Fi access to the other buildings in Grant Houses.
