ARISE! Youth Development Program

From 2011- 2016, West Harlem Development Corporation (WHDC) invested $2.1M to ensure that at least 250 youth in MCD9 were guaranteed slots in New York City’s Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP). In 2017, WHDC initiated its own youth development program named ARISE! (All Rising In Strengthening Excellence) that exclusively serves MCD9 high school students (14-18 years) each summer paying them for participation in both employment and academic enrichment components. The latter aims to address the “summer slide” that affects some students after the school year. Through 2019, WHDC has expended $3.1M on both ARISE! and our investment in SYEP.

Serving the community for our fifth year, WHDC is pleased to announce the hybrid 2021 ARISE! youth development program. WHDC will run a modified program for six weeks in Summer 2021 centered on project based learning, group problem solving, and wellness.

2021 ARISE! Program Dates: July 12th – August 20th

SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS: WHDC is continuing to monitor official recommendations for combating the COVID-19 pandemic. ARISE! will offer virtual academic programming and Friday outdoor activities in accordance with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) safety guidelines. There will be no employment component for 2021.

Due to an increased need to expand youth opportunities, WHDC plans to reach more youth through this year’s ARISE!. We want teens to engage with their surrounding community and discuss what they see happening right here in West Harlem.

Participants will receive a $1500 stipend for successfully meeting program expectations.

Eligibility Requirements:

The ARISE! 2021 application period is now closed. For more information, contact ARISE! Program Lead Ken Miles at WHDCARISE@westharlemdc.org.

*MCD9 Boundary – 110th to 155th Streets from the Hudson River to an eastern boundary along Manhattan, Morningside, St. Nicholas, Bradhurst, and Edgecombe Avenues.

We look forward to this summer!
