West Harlem Development Corporation (WHDC) gave away hundreds of toys, books and other treats to a crowd of 500 children and families at its Seventh Annual Community Holiday Celebration and Toy Giveaway on Saturday, December 21st at The Riverside Church’s South Hall in West Harlem, NY. At the WHDC signature event, World Childhood Foundation USA awarded the winners of a drawing contest that asked children to create pictures and essays showing “I can stay safe online by…“.

WHDC-funded arts and culture organizations entertained the crowd with multi-cultural representative performances as well as acts that featured lively dancing getting the audience moving. The renowned Afro-Brazilian percussion sensation Batála New York enthusiastically rounded out the show before educational toys and books were given away in WHDC-branded reusable bags.

The holiday celebration’s mission has always been to bring together families at a performance that showcases Harlem’s rich arts and culture organizations while giving them quality toys that can enhance their children’s education,” said WHDC Executive Director, Kofi A. Boateng, PhD.

WHDC thanks its collaborators The Riverside Church, NYPD’s 26th Precinct, Columbia University Facilities and Operations, Infrastructure Engineering and World Childhood Foundation among other supporters for their generous donations and funds to provide the children of West Harlem quality educational toys and books.

Special thanks to performers, National Dance Institute’s Celebration Team, Danza Fiesta, Sing Harlem Choir, Batála, and the wonderful Joyce Adewumi with her New York African Chorus Ensemble, for engaging performances that had the whole crowd on their feet making the record-breaking 2019 event even more special for West Harlem families and friends.
